AMGrad Girls 290 x 195.jpg American Graduate: Tackling the Dropout Epidemic

“American Graduate” is a nationwide effort by public radio and television stations, exploring solutions and resources to lower the dropout rate. Ask any student whether he or she expects to graduate from high school, and the vast majority – 92 percent – say yes. For many students, however, the reality is much different. Only seven in ten will actually finish high school, and for Hispanic, African-American and Native American students, that statistic drops to six in ten. This is an American tragedy, but a tragedy we can correct.

For more on the current state of education in the US, be sure to tune in to the Independent Lens program, "The Graduates" on RMPBS, airing Monday, Oct. 28 at 9pm. Pressing issues in education today are explored through the eyes of a diverse array of Latino and Latina adolescents from across the United States, offering first-hand perspectives on key challenges facing both the students and their families, as well as educators and community leaders.

As part of KUVO’s participation in the American Graduate project, we conducted interviews with local Denver-area educators about topics that impact students leaving school and about their own experiences as teachers. Selections from these videos are presented here.

KUVO also completed a survey of resources available in the Front Range area that address the drop-out crisis and attempt to keep students in school. These resources are listed below.
